Novel Concept for Customer Information Security

A company that is providing an online file storage business--with a free level of 1GB of storage. This company is box.net. I am not writing to discuss how well the service works, but to make a quick note on the "Security" section in its Privacy Policy. It states:

No customer information is stored on Box.net employees' personal computers.

This could be ambiguous. (Is the employer-issued computer the "employee's personal computer" or only computers actually owned by the employee?) I'll look at the following using the stricter interpretation of the former.

Now how hard would that be for other companies and public entities to implement? There are companies that have very personal information on thousand or millions of customers, but let employees have that data on their employees' computers. There have been notebook computers, CDs, and even desktops that have been recently lost, stolen, or otherwise unaccounted for.

Wired News: The Wii Is a Plastic Box of Death

Wired News: The Wii Is a Plastic Box of Death

Lore Sjobert (sorry, I don't have the umlaut on my keybord for the o) has written a very entertaining article about how the Nintendo Wii (or "the Murder Appliance" as he calls it) has changed video games to transform troubled and not-so-troubled youth into murdering gang members. As a Wii owner, I find this hilarious. I am somewhat surprised that this was written for Wired and not for theonion.com.
He talks about how the controller could be more popular than the Glock if it were more plentiful. Also, the Wii Sports games encourage gamers to be more active and so they could actually join gangs and "be mobile for a while."

Now if only we could get more Wii gamers to hold on to their controllers a little harder.

Should this be the end of the radio station that sponsored the "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest?

cbs13.com - Strange's Lawyer Asks FCC To Pull Station Off Air

Should this be the end of the radio station that sponsored the "Hold your wee for a Wii" contest? I'm not sure, but they should definitely be punished for this reckless behavior. Either they should be severely fined or they should have their broadcasting license terminated. Apparently, 107.9 "The End" did not warn the 18 contestants of the contest of any potential health hazard and did not do sufficient research to prevent this tragedy from happening. In their standard contest rules, they have the expected stipulation that "17. KDND-107.9 THE END radio, its agencies, affiliates, sponsors, or representatives absolve themselves of any liability, financial or otherwise, resultant of any "on" or "off" air contest staged by KDND-107.9 THE END."
I have to wonder if the FCC is already looking into this, but not wanting to say so publicly. In any case, Sacramento, California may be saying goodbye to "The End" as they know it.

Fredrik and Crew on Maiken: Stone sea and volcano

Fredrik and Crew on Maiken: Stone sea and volcano

This is something that does not happen that often. The birth of an island is caught in pictures by a passing yacht in the Pacific Ocean. Could this be a vacation spot in the making? Not likely given that it is so new and likely to get covered by more volcanic activity. Nevertheless, this is noteworthy as more land is being created despite the alleged disappearance of shores and islands elsewhere.
