Inquirer.net Article on Disposal of Sony's Exploding Batteries

It seems Charlie Demerjian, taking after the National Enquirer, is sensationalizing what will happen when the recalled batteries are returned to their manufacturer. More than 5 million laptop batteries have been recalled by Dell and Apple, with the acknowledgement that Sony manufactured the batteries and will help in the recall effort.
While this may be worrisome given that they have been reported to explode, I do not think it is as big an issue as Charlies makes it out to be. He claims that the batteries will likely explode while in warehouses awaiting shipment to Sony or in Sony's possession awaiting disposal. In my opinion, unless the warehouses kept by the shippers (FedEx/UPS/DHL) are kept well above room temperature, the batteries are not likely to melt or explode. The idea that they will combust while in the relative coolness of a warehouse (compared to the scorching heat of a laptop computer) is laughable.
The one point that I do agree with Demerjian on is that Sony does have the responsibility to dispose/recycle the batteries properly. I would like to see them put to good use as other batteries (preferably less volatile batteries) or made into inert materials.

It Has Come To My Attention: Sleep diet

This sounds pretty interesting. I wonder how much sleep (in the dark) I really get at night. The light coming from the numbers on my alarm clock seem really bright in the bedroom at night. Then again, maybe that's because it is already very dark in there.

Well, it finally happened!!!

I got married to Sheena, the love of my life, the most beautiful woman in the world, the one and only. The wedding day was a bit hectic, but it was a good time. We were sealed for time and all eternity in the Temple of the Lord. Afterwards, I checked into the hotel, which was not easy to get to thanks to the poor directions the employee who answered the phone gave.We then rushed to get to the church building in Smyrna to take pictures and hold a ring ceremony and reception. We had a great honeymoon in Gatlinburg, Tennessee. We stayed in a nice "cabin" that had a hot tub, pool table and satellite TV. We played a few games of pool, got to know each other better, and went to see a lot of the attractions in town. We also made a nice trip to Dollywood where, to our surprise, we rode one of the best rollercoasters ever, The Thunderhead. And,.... I'll talk more about it later.

15 Days!!!

Only 15 days until the wedding! I can't wait. I'm moving into the house this weekend--on Friday instead of Saturday as had been the original plan.

Jakarta Post switches Printer Friendly Page

I was going through the RSS feeds in my Gmail and stumbled on this one that looked intriguing. I went on to open a few more news stories and ended up looking at that one last. When I got to this story's tab I began to wonder how I had found a story such as this. It had nothing to do with hackers or programmers or even businesses--well, not directly anyways. It is an article about a director performing a skit about a Letter to the Devil. It is rather interesting as he shares his views that the devil is in all of us, so long as we allow him to be. I looked further at the page and could not find an 'Email Story' link. I clicked on the 'Printer Friendly' link and to my surprise I was presented an article about hackers and onmac.net's contest for installing Windows XP on an Intel Mac. Which was not as interesting as the headline suggested, but does bring up a very good point that collaboration can solve problems much more quickly than closed-source business models--albeit with a slightly lower quality given the accessibility of Apple programmers to the hardware/software on the Intel Macs.

The origin of Dot Com ...

In ancient Israel, it came to pass that a trader by the name of Abraham Com did take unto himself a young wife by the name of Dot.

And Dot Com was a comely woman, broad of shoulder and long of leg. Indeed, she had been called 'Amazon Dot Com.'

And she said unto Abraham, her husband, "Why dost thou travel far from town to town with thy goods when thou can trade without ever leaving thy tent?"

And Abraham did look at her as though she were several saddle bags short of a camel load, but simply said, "How, dear?"

And Dot replied, "I will place drums in all the towns and drums in between to send messages saying what you have for sale and they will reply telling you which hath the best price. And the sale can be made on the drums and delivery made by Uriah's Pony Stable (UPS)."

Abraham thought long and decided he would let Dot have her way with the drums. And the drums rang out and were an immediate success. Abraham sold all the goods he had at the top price, without ever moving from his tent.

But this success did arouse envy. A man named Maccabia did secrete himself inside Abraham's drum and was accused of insider trading. And the young man did take to Dot Com's trading as doth the greedy horsefly take to camel dung. They were called Nomadic Ecclesiastical Rich Dominican Siderites, or NERDS for short.

And lo, the land was so feverish with joy at the new riches and the deafening sound of drums that no one noticed that the real riches were going to the drum maker, one Brother William of Gates, who bought up every drum company in the land. And indeed did insist on making drums that would work only with Brother Gates' drumheads and drumsticks.

And Dot did say, "Oh, Abraham, what we have started is being taken over by others."

And as Abraham looked out over the Bay of Ezekiel, or as it came to be known "eBay" he said, "We need a name! that reflects what we are."

And Dot replied, "Young Ambitious Hebrew Owner Operators."

"YAHOO," said Abraham.

And that is how it all began. It wasn't Al Gore after all.

Tornado Experience

Well, there are tornado warnings in northwest Georgia right now. I just spent a few hours with Sheena and she's had a tornado experience today. On her way to her car after school she was called something fairly nast and was pretty shook up by it. After quite some time talking to her on the phone and then visiting with her at her house, she seemed to feel better. Then after that I go and say pretty much the stupidest thing I could possibly say. I don't know why I said it and I realized what I said right afterwards, but needless to say she was not pleased. She asked me to leave and after trying to cry/hold back tears I left. I hope I can make up for it soon. She should get a nice surprise sometime tomorrow. If not, I'll be very upset with a certain service. I just wanted to die after I said what I said. If there was anyting I could do over that would be at the top of the list ... by far. I've done many stupid things in my life but that would be the harshest, most memorable one for me. In any case I'm sorry and I hope that Sheena will somehow see it in her to forgive me, especially since our families will be having dinner together tonight.
Love,
Sean

D&B for Sheena's B-day

Well, today I took Sheena to D&B as part of her birthday present. We would have gone on Friday--her birthday, but it was wayyyy too busy. Anyways, we had a good time despite a slight misunderstanding.

Project for PoliSci

Well, for my political science class, I'm going to be researching and writing on the economy in Argentina. So... if you have any information like a good book or website that has information on the economy in Argentina, then feel free to post a comment.
Also, I need to finish my take-home test in Statistics. It shouldn't be that hard, but we'll see. Maybe I can work on it at the bowling alley tonight.

Working on MLK Day

Well, it's Martin Luther King, Jr. Day and I'm here at work. For those of you worrying about me getting in trouble--Don't! Because I'm taking a short break. I've had a good weekend. I went to my bro's house, where he had some people present information about Pre-Paid Legal Services. I ended up signing up for it, though I think I will cancel. I just don't think I really need it, and I don't like pushing things on others, especially friends. If anything, I need to be more open to talking about the gospel. Well, I got to spend a lot of time playing games this weekend, which I love. Tonight at FHE (family home evening) for the singles ward we're going to play "Human Board Games". Sounds like it will be fun, kinda like the "real wizard's chess" in Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone.

Gotta go.

Late For Meeting Sheena...Again

Well, today I left later from work than I expected. I lost track of time from the new hire asking me questions about how to enter the information from rebates, looking at and responding to questions from customers, business partners, and fellow employees, and entering claims myself. Also, it's amazing how dense some people can be. I'm talking about some of the people at work. One in particular cannot understand simple instructions after being told like 50 million times what to do and how things work. So, I finally left work after dealing with all these issues that, ironically came about by the company laying me off and not having people capable of doing my job or the job of the other person laid off at the same time.
I am just about to get to Sheena's house and decided to call her to apologize for getting there late and she tells me to turn around. I wasn't mad at her, but a little frustrated that I wasted gas driving to her house and back past work to get to the church for institute.
Institute was good--better once Sheena was talking to me again. Sister Cormican (however you spell it) taught pretty well, except that she kept reiterating the difference between belief and faith when I felt it was quite clear.
Afterward we went to The Wave on Roswell Road which is about the best Hawaiian restaurant I've ever been to. OK, so I'm pretty sure it's the only Hawaiian restaurant I've eaten at, but the food there is really good. The Teriyaki Burger is so awesome. The ice cream and shaved ice are excellent as well. Oh, and when I got home I wrote a little 300 word essay due at midnight and posted to the threaded discussions. All right, well I'm falling asleep so that's all for now.

Until next time,
scc

First Post

Well, I now have my very own blog thanks to blogger. I am not good at keeping a journal so maybe this will help. Last night I had a fun time making pizza and playing Scene It at my friend's house along with my girlfriend. The dance at the glenridge bldg was pretty lame though and both me and sb (my girlfriend, not strong bad) were tired. I just wish I'd taken some pictures of the pizza and people there.

Oh and by the way, I LOVE SHEENA BRUNNER!

In later posts I'll start publishing pictures. I have accounts with Snapfish and Flickr, so I could post links to my albums on there as well.

If you want a Gmail email account without giving them you mobile number you can send a request to me and I'll send you an invite.

Hope you enjoy my blog.
